The Government Shut Down. Will I Still Get My Disability Benefits?

The U.S. government is currently shut down because Congress has not passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government. We don’t know how long the shutdown will last. When the federal government is shut down, some agencies stop or reduce their work.
The Social Security Administration will reduce some of their work during this shutdown. Disability and retirement benefits should still be paid on time. Many of Social Security’s other activities will also continue, including benefits applications, appeals, payee changes, and issuing Social Security cards. Overpayment processing and benefits verifications will stop until the shutdown ends. If you are getting support from your elected representative with a Social Security issue, Social Security will not respond their requests for support on your behalf during the shutdown. You can still reach out to your representatives for help.
During the shutdown, it may be more difficult to communicate with Social Security. We recommend using your my Social Security (mySSA) account as much as possible to avoid long hold times on the phone.
