SNAP Benefits Will Be Impacted by the Government Shutdown
The federal government shutdown that began on October 1, 2025 continues because Congress has not yet passed a new budget bill to fund the government. Without federal funds to support the program, SNAP benefits (called Basic Food in Washington) will be impacted in November.
According to the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) in Washington, people will not receive their November food benefits. As of right now, Oregon’s DHS office and Idaho’s DHW office have not shared if food benefits will be paid in November in those states.
DSHS will not be reaching out to individuals to let them know of these changes but are sharing the news online and in their offices and call centers. Some DSHS staff will also be temporarily laid off until the shutdown ends. This means you may experience longer wait times if you reach out to DSHS.
Do you need food?
Unfortunately, many programs that provide food are affected by this government shutdown, including SNAP and WIC. If you need food, reach out to your local food bank. Many food banks receive some federal funding, so they may not be able to offer as much as they typically do, and you may experience longer wait times due to staffing shortages, but food banks are there to help. You can find food banks near you here or by calling 211. Local churches and other community organizations may also provide free food or a weekly meal.
The National School Lunch program will continue to operate as normal for the foreseeable future. If your child is enrolled in this program, they will continue to receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. If your child is not enrolled in this program and your family meets the income eligibility guidelines, reach out to their school to find out how to sign up.
If you need help finding a food bank near you, one of our Financial Coaches can help you. We are generally able to see you the next business day. Please reach out!
