Using a My Social Security Account

What is a my Social Security Account?
A my Social Security, or mySSA, account is a free online account that allows users to access the Social Security Administration’s online services 24/7. As Social Security moves toward its stated goal of being a “digital-first, technology-driven organization,” using Social Security’s online services when possible is the best way to avoid wait times and the need to schedule an appointment on the phone or at your local office. My Social Security Accounts are a helpful tool whether or not you receive disability benefits.
Creating a mySSA account
You can create a mySSA account by going to ssa.gov/myaccount. Social Security will require you to use a Login.gov or ID.me account to login, which are free to create and meet the federal government’s identity verification and security requirements.
Login.gov and ID.me will require you to verify your identity with your photo ID, Social Security Number, and contact information to create your account. You’ll also need to take a photo of yourself so they can match it to your ID. If you are unable to take a photo of yourself, they offer other options to verify your identity. You’ll only need to go through this step when you create an account.
What can a mySSA account do?
MySSA accounts offer a variety of tools and services.
If you don’t receive disability benefits, you can:
- Request a new Social Security card
- See your earnings history and check it for accuracy
- Get an estimate of future retirement, survivors, and disability benefits you may be eligible for
If you are applying for disability benefits, you can:
- Check if you’re insured for SSDI and get a benefit estimate
- Start an application
- Check your application status
- Upload forms and documents required for your application
If you receive disability benefits, you can:
- Set up or change direct deposit information
- Update your address
- Get a benefit verification letter
- Report your wages if you’re working
- Complete and upload forms during a Continuing Disability Review
New Feature – Uploading Documents!
One of mySSA’s newest features is the ability to upload forms and records within your account, including both Social Security forms and your own records (like medical records or paystubs). Northwest Access Fund recommends using your mySSA account to upload your forms and records whenever possible. Using your mySSA account to upload forms and records reduces the risk of these documents getting lost and you’ll be able to see that your document was received. To upload your forms and records, click on the blue “Upload Documents” link on your mySSA home screen.
In Conclusion
A mySSA account offers many benefits no matter how often you need to interact with the Social Security Administration. If you have questions about creating an account or need a walkthrough of how to upload your documents, a financial coach at Northwest Access Fund can help. Reach out today!
